Description
This bold and eccentric hand-carved mermaid is an expressive work by Jean Marc Poirier, a celebrated folk artist from Îles-de-la-Madeleine. Painted in bright, high-contrast colors, her fuchsia-pink skin and sharply defined black hair frame a stylized face with dramatic lashes and a sly smile. Her upright posture and squared-off chest give her an almost architectural profile. The mermaid’s vivid yellow tail—dappled in painterly red and black spots—curls beneath her into a playful arc, anchored atop a rounded base in leopard-spotted blue. A gleeful and slightly irreverent take on maritime myth, this sculpture is signed “J.M. Poirier” on the underside.
