Description
A striking, large-format lithograph by pop art icon Roy Lichtenstein, M–Maybe (1979) captures the artist’s signature blend of comic book stylization and emotional ambiguity. First conceived as a painting in 1965, M–Maybe features a glamorous blonde heroine suspended in a moment of cinematic suspense, her speech bubble reading, “M–Maybe he became ill and couldn’t leave the studio!”
This rare edition was published during Lichtenstein’s major 1979 retrospective at the Tel Aviv Museum of Art, one of only a few international museum exhibitions of his work during that decade. The lithograph’s generous scale—approximately 40 × 55 inches—amplifies the drama and immediacy of the composition, with bold primary colors, graphic outlines, and Benday dot textures that evoke the mass-print aesthetic while transcending it.
Now over four decades old, this piece carries a quiet historical resonance, representing both Lichtenstein’s lasting cultural impact and the international dialogue around American Pop Art in the late 20th century.
