Description

This imaginative sculpture by Kevin Roach pays homage to Nova Scotia’s legendary schooner, the Bluenose, through the lens of Roach’s distinct folk art language. Fusing marine nostalgia with whimsical invention, the piece transforms the iconic fishing-racing vessel into a fantastical steampunk-like hybrid, complete with a violin scroll for a prow, mechanical fixtures for smokestacks, and a recorder as a central mast.

Crafted from repurposed wood and vintage components, the ship is both familiar and surreal. Painted in bold marine red and navy blue, it evokes summers along the Atlantic coast—where wooden boats dot the harbours and legends of the Bluenose are passed through generations. The delicate balance of precision and play recalls Roach’s connection to Ontario’s lakeside traditions, while the subject bridges east coast maritime culture with Roach’s signature humor and charm.
