Sorel Etrog

Sorel Etrog was a Romanian-Canadian sculptor, painter, and writer known for his bold, mechanical-inspired sculptures that explore themes of movement, connection, and human form. Born in Romania, Etrog immigrated to Canada in 1959 and quickly established himself as one of the country’s leading sculptors.

His signature style is characterized by interlocking, articulated forms that resemble both organic and industrial structures. His work often conveys themes of fragmentation and unity, reflecting his interest in the human condition and the relationship between man and machine. Some of his most famous public sculptures, such as Sun Life in Toronto and Flight in Montreal, remain landmarks in the Canadian art landscape.

Etrog’s works are held in major collections, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the National Gallery of Canada, and the Art Gallery of Ontario. He was awarded the Order of Canada for his contributions to Canadian art, and his legacy as one of the country’s most important modern sculptors continues to influence contemporary artists.
