Matthew Collins

Matthew Collins is a Canadian painter based in Liverpool, Nova Scotia. He earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design (NSCAD) in 1998, specializing in painting and art history.

Collins’ work spans both landscape painting and conceptual explorations. His landscapes, which primarily depict the coastal scenery of Nova Scotia’s South Shore, are characterized by expressive mark-making and vibrant color. Rather than focusing on precise realism, he emphasizes the act of painting itself, allowing texture and movement to take precedence over fine details.

Throughout his career, Collins has exhibited widely, participating in solo and group shows across Nova Scotia’s South Shore, Halifax, and Montreal. His work is held in public, corporate, and private collections in Canada, Germany, Holland, and the United States. He has received notable recognition, including a Creation Grant from Arts Nova Scotia in 2013, and acquisitions by the Nova Scotia Art Bank in 2013 and 2015.

In 2016, his work was featured in Terroir: A Nova Scotia Survey, a traveling exhibition organized by the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia. More recently, his exhibition I Made Some Paintings at Teichert Gallery showcased his ongoing exploration of Nova Scotia’s landscapes through color, texture, and gestural abstraction.
