Jean-Paul Riopelle was one of Canada’s most internationally recognized painters, known for his energetic abstract compositions. His early work was associated with the Automatiste movement, emphasizing free expression and spontaneity through his signature palette knife techniques.
Riopelle spent much of his career in France, where he became a leading figure in post-war abstraction. His work evolved over time, moving from dense, colorful mosaics to more fluid, expressive paintings and sculptures. His monumental L’Hommage à Rosa Luxemburg remains one of his most significant later works.
His paintings are housed in major international collections, and his legacy as an innovator in 20th-century abstraction continues to shape modern Canadian art.
